Maritime Laws Speakers: Satellites & Granite Topped Subwoofer
2.1 speaker system titled "Maritime Laws". Built for Part Express's audio speaker competition in 2020. All of the drivers in these speakers are some of the best available from Dayton Audio, a lauded American company of audio equipment and speakers.
The sub is topped with a brilliant piece of 1-1/8" thick granite; the sides are double thick - 3/4" plywood clad with cork flooring, finished with oak trim. The granite has the blue of the sea and the white of the sea's foam; cork is a common nautical material with great acoustic damping properties. The fronts of the monitors are also double thick plywood + cork flooring; the sides are stained mahogany (again, a naval wood). This maritime theme inspired the name for these speakers, which is also a take-off from my son's musical album of the same title.
Look very carefully at the granite. There were two cuts about 1.5” long I filled with blue epoxy that I did my best to hide. Call it an "I spy" challenge. Honestly, I can’t see the filled spots in any of the images, so I guess that means they are well hidden. Casually looking at the speaker they are not noticeable, but upon close in person examination, they can be found. I consider this part of the beauty of these speakers - they are built completely from leftover, excessed, or reclaimed materials.
The cabinet volumes were properly sized and tuned to match the drivers; the speakers were tested in my work room using a calibrated microphone and found to be accurate to within about +/- 8 dB from 20 to 20,000 Hz. About half of this +/- 8 dB variation is due to the poor acoustics of my shop.
The system is passive, that means it is not powered; and there are no internal crossovers in the sub. The system was designed to be used with a 2.1 amplifier that has a powered sub out channel, like the Dayton Audio DTA-2.1BT2 or Fosi Audio BT30D; both of these mini amps are fine for these speakers. If you need an amplifier and want to include one, feel free to ask.

This is a handmade marriage of art and engineering, built and designed by an experienced engineer and craftsman.
I do a variety of audio projects which have included: Karaoke boom boxes, Bluetooth speakers, hot-rodding antique radios, tall narrow towers with side firing woofers, and many of other subwoofer and speaker system builds. If you would like something custom built, feel free to ask me about it.
